I would encourage those critics to do their own research and publish their own findings. I am well aware that some will question my figures and criticize my findings. I have only addressed instruments for which there is a regular and established market, so not every model is included. I did not consider auction sales (such as E-Bay) private sales between individuals who are not regular dealers pawn shop or other irregular sources, or any anecdotal stories. I have based my research on actual selling prices by recognized dealers. The pearls are still sharp, the keywork is not worn – this is about as close to an original condition Big B as you will find. When I set out to prepare a reference guide for pricing vintage horns, I did so with the clear understanding that it’s not a perfect world, and that the preparation of a perfect value guide would be impossible. This one has been played very little – the wear to the lacquer is not from being played – just from time and oxidation inside the case. Most of them have been around the block too many times. It can be hard to find a clean example of a Big B tenor these days. It still has the snap in pads intact and it has Norton springs as well. With a mix of mostly older and a few newer pads, it plays well enough that you could play it as is for a while and either get it repadded soon, or have several pads replaced at regular intervals over the next few years. This is pretty minor and also very common on vintage saxophones. Besides some light lacquer wear, the only issue to mention is that the neck has been pulled down and then restored to the correct angle. These are excellent, professional tenors that are highly prized for their big complex tone, good build quality, excellent intonation, and all around satisfying playing experience. These horns are among the best tenors ever made and were billed as an all-purpose alternative to the ‘jazzier’ 400 line. This is a nice, clean, original lacquer Buescher Big B tenor saxophone.
